The undefeated Clay county Panthers tuned up for their Class 1A, Region 5 showdown with undefeated Wadley next week with a 35-12 victory over the Notasulga Blue Devils.

Clay County coach Danny Horn was proud to get the win, but said his team has got to get better.

"We didnt execute well and we missed some scoring opportunities," Horn said. "Weve got to get better before next Friday."

After a scoreless first quarter the Panthers (8-0, 5-0) saw their chance to take the lead fade early in the second on a 25-yard field goal attempt that sailed wide left.

The Panthers found the end zone on their next possession, however, marching 28 yards for a touchdown. J.R. Hess scored on a six-yard run with 8:23 left in the first half. The point after was no good to make the score 6-0.

With 4:41 left in the first half, Kevin Pitts connected with Tommy Hunter on a 27-yard touchdown pass. Brian Glenn ran in the two-point conversion to give Clay County a 14-0 lead. The score capped a 29-yard drive. The Panthers carried that lead to the locker room at the half.

On their first possession of the third quarter, Pitts scampered 42 yards for a touchdown with 10 minutes to play. Jose Bermudez added the point after to give Clay County a 21-0 lead.

With 5:55 left in the quarter, Glenn returned a punt 45 yards for a touchdown. Bermudez connected on the PAT to give Clay County a commanding 28-0 lead.

With 4:20 left in the third quarter, Glenn struck again with a 34-yard punt return for a touchdown. Bermudezs point-after gave Clay County a 35-0 lead.

Notasulga (5-3, 3-2) finally cracked the scoreboard in the fourth quarter on an 18-yard pass play from Tony Askew to Anthony Morgan and a 79-yard run by Morgan.

Clay County will host Wadley next week for the regional championship.

"Wadley has a good team," Horn said. "We will have to be ready for them. I am looking forward to the game."
