WEDOWEE

The Class 1A Clay County Panthers kept their season record unblemished with a 23-6 road victory over the 2A Randolph County Tigers on Friday.

Clay County coach Danny Horn was pleased to get the win.

It was a lot better than last year, a hard-nosed, physical game, Horn said. It is never easy coming over here.
They have got a good team, Horn went on to say, a young one that will get better.

He added that his team, has a lot of work to do to be a good team.

Clay County took an early lead with just under four minutes gone off the clock in the first quarter on a 57-yard run by Brian Glenn.

The point after by Jose Bermudez was good to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead.

The Panthers scored again with 40 seconds remaining in the first quarter when Glenn hauled in a tipped pass and went 40 yards for the score. Bermudez added the point after to give Clay County a 14-0 lead.

With 34 seconds remaining the first half, Bermudez gave Clay County a 17-0 lead with a 33-yard field goal, making him 4-of-5 on field goal attempts this year.

In the third quarter, Maurice Winston scampered 42 yards for a Randolph County touchdown. The PAT was no good, leaving the score 17-6.

As time expired in the third quarter, DeWayne Duncan scored on a 10-yard run to cap a 57-yard drive.

The PAT was no good, but Clay County still had enough for the 23-6 win.

I like the way our guys came back the second half after Randolph County scored, Horn said. We came back and scored, we didnt get down.

Tiger coach Pat Prestridge said he was disappointed with the loss, but was pleased with his teams performance against a team the caliber of Clay County.

In the first half, we really didnt know if we could play with them or not, Prestridge said. It is tough to stop a bowling ball.

They are a good team and may even win 1A this year

Prestridge added, We are still making too many mistakes, too many penalties and too many fumbles.

Leading Clay County was Travis Zachary with 129 yards rushing.

Clay County (5-0) will host Talladega County Central next Friday. Randolph County (2-3) will travel to Weaver.
