Clay County used a pair of senior workhorses to grind out a punishing ground attack to wear down Winterboro and take a 40-13 victory Friday night.
J.R. Hess struck paydirt first for the Panthers, pushing into the endzone from four yards out in the first quarter. Dewayne Duncan then scored the first of his three touchdowns, a four-yard run with 17 second left in the opening quarter.
Winterboros Trenez Jones put the Bulldogs on the board with a 75-yard touchdown pass to Keric Merritt in the second quarter. Duncan then scored again on a five-yard run before Clay County picked up two more points minutes later with a safety.
In the third quarter, Travis Zachery added to the Clay County onslaught with a three-yard touchdown run followed by a five-yard scoring run by Duncan.
Corey McLemore added a nine-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring for the Panthers. Jones capped the scoring for Winterboro with a five-yard touchdown run with 1:57 left in the game.
Duncan finished with 108 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries. Hess piled up 101 yards and a score on nine carries. Clay County will play host to Loachapoka next week. |
