Clay County shuts down Bowdon 14-0

For Clay Countys Dewayne Duncan, Thursday nights home opener against Bowdon, Ga., was just one big surprise. There was hardly anything in the Panthers 14-0 win that went like he thought it would.

  • Duncan on his 84-yard touchdown run, I thought they had me stopped.

They didnt have him stopped and they couldnt catch him either. Duncan bounced off a defender at the line of scrimmage and outran Bowdon defenders on Clay Countys opening drive of the second half.

  • Duncan on his fourth quarter interception, I thought I was going to score.

It looked like Duncan would have his second touchdown, but the closer the senior got the end zone the more traffic there was. He was hauled down at the six, where Clay County ran out the clock.

  • And Duncan on the game, I really thought we were going to get blown out.

If Duncan was worried, according to the Georgia hype, there was reason to be. Last year, Bowdon made it to Georgias Class A championship game, and they came into this game ranked No. 2 in Georgias preseason poll.

But the only blowing out came from the boys from Alabama.

Clay County held the Red Devils to only 153 yards total offense and forced three turnovers two interceptions and a fumble.

Clay County, on the other hand, amassed 243 yards rushing using seven different ball carriers. Duncan led the group with 10 carries for 101 yards. Three players Travis Zachery, quarterback Kevin Pitts and J.R. Hess finished with 40 yards each.

I just wanted to win by one point, I didnt care what the score was, Clay County head coach Danny Horn said of his Panthers shutout.

Clay County assured they werent going to be on the wrong end of a shutout early. Zachery, Clay Countys bruising fullback, carried the ball from one-half yard out to post the Panthers first points of the night.

It was a run that capped a 12-play, 66-yard drive.

Bowdon threatened once but never made it into the end zone. In its second drive of the second half, quarterback Eric Bowling scrambled for 25 yards, the Red Devils longest run of the night, to spark the offense. A late-hit was tacked on to the run, moving the ball to the Clay County 24.

They continued to drive, but coughed up the ball at the six. Clay Countys Michael Bass came up with the fumble preserving what would be the shutout.
