CURRENT AT CCHS
By: Matt Campbell
Just a few things that are going on around campus at CCHS:
1. Head baseball coach Gary Reynolds has "retired" as head baseball and assitstant football coach for CCHS. His presence I'm sure will be sorely missed come Friday nights, it just won't be the same without the voice from the press box. Although he has dropped his coaching positions, Coach Reynolds will stay on this year at CCHS to teach science, as he has always done. Coach may not be in the pressbox making the calls, but come Friday night, I'm sure he will be in the stands, and will still have a voice to be heard.
2. What's up with the schools? Here's the deal for all of the people who always find out last. The decision has been made to keep Mellow Valley and Bibb Graves schools open for the upcoming year, although both schools will be closed next year. This means that the talent from Bibb Graves and Mellow Valley will then be divided into Ashland or Lineville. Next year, when both of these schools are closed, the talk is that zoneing will be inforced, meaning that some of the football players will be moved to the opposing school. For all the Ashland guys living in Lineville, and vice versa for the Lineville folks, this is going to be a MESS, if , or when, it happens. So unless arrangments can be made, some players are going to be sporting some different colors within the next few years. Let's just keep our fingers crossed and keep the schools in our prayers.
3. Summer workouts come to a halt. Now the panther team will start practices, starting out with 2-a-day practices for the extra week of summer granted because of the mess with the schools. Then when school starts the team will be going full tilt and back to the 1-a-day practices. Its going to be some tough stuff in the heat, but the Panther team is about commitment, and is ready for the season to get underway.
4. Talk of another state championship at CCHS???.....well, lets just look at this before we reach any conclusions. The team had a great spring training this year and has worked hard all summer. With the talent on this team and the fact that they dropped to 1A, it has some of the football fanatics in Clay County licking there lips, knowing the chance for another trip to Birmingham might be in the future. Though, we have dropped a class that doesn't mean the competition is going to get easier. Even Coach Horn has been quoted as saying that he would rather be back in 2A, playing in the region we were in last year rather than in 1A, in the class we are in now. So, this means it's going be a tough road and extremly hard, but the chance is there. It's always there, and with hard work and commitment by the panther team this chance might can be cashed into another state title.
5. Zackery shocks the players and coaches at max out.
From the looks of what happened at Max outs last Thursday night, Travis is ready to get the season underway. He amazed everyone with the numbers he posted. Setting new records for the school. Here are his lifts....Squat, "parallel", 525 pounds, Deadlift, 560 pounds. I'm not sure of his bench press, but I do know his total weights were 1400 pounds. So I'll leave the math to you. Some of the quotes from the players were as follows: "We all new the guy was going to be strong, but I didn't expect this," and "Im speachless." The second quote seemed to be the most popular among teammates and coaches. Several other of the lead players also posted impresive weights. Players such as: Micheal Bass, J.R. Hess, and "Cowboy" Simmons. Coach Horn was pleased with the attendance for this summers workouts and stated it was as good as he had ever seen. He says we have great senior leadership, and I don't know of anyone that disagrees on that. Pads and helmets were given out and 2-a-day practices will begin on Monday. Then going into the school year the next week, the team will be back to the 1-a-day routine after school. From what I see, all the players are looking forward to getting started. Those chilly Friday nights under the lights are getting closer and closer, but lets just take it one step at a time and get through the heated practices of August. The time is getting near folks, get ready for some football. Thats what's new on campus at CCHS.
Thats about it for now, and once again I remind all the fans to keep the schools in there prayers, and enjoy the upcoming season of panther football. It should be a great one!
